Library and lemons
Today's adventure was a trip to the library in St Dizant on Broomstick, and getting lost in the fields on the way back (I tried to take the shortcut past the woods east of La Grande Motte). The new library, though in full working order and bearing its shiny new sign, won't have its Official Opening until September, when the relevant dignitaries from the prefecture can attend. They paid for the work on the building, so it's only fair. The librarian will have a full complement of books by then, too. At the moment there is space on the shelves, but it's hardly noticeable behind the exhibition of paintings by local artists. Reading in the shade of a lemon tree is marvellous: the blossom smells wonderful. Darcy has well over a hundred tiny lemons; some of them have already fallen off, and more will follow, but I'm hoping for a good crop. Last year only six lemons survived, but Darcy is much bigger now. One of last year's lemons is still ripening on the tree. You'd think the tree would get confused - there are also new flowers forming, so it's going through its full flower-fruit cycle all at once. And I have pigged out on cherries :) This entry was originally posted at http://sunflowerinrain.dreamwidth.org/512981.html. Unwanted wildlife and wanted: topsoil
The half-winepress at the top of the garden has been moved to underneath the albizia by the front door. All it needs now is a lot of soil, and plants. The living-room stinks of insects. I don't know whether the smell is from an ants' nest or from masonry bees, but it's very strong. Had cherries for breakfast again :) This entry was originally posted at http://sunflowerinrain.dreamwidth.org/512633.html. Roses, cherries ripe, and palm-leaf fans
It's a shame this laptop won't accept photos from my camera, because the roses are looking splendid. Aymerick picked some more cherries and then did a huge sorting of the confusion in the middle of the garden where previous-owners planted far too much far too close together, and trimmed that dratted NZ fern/palm/whatever. There is now a display of fronds in the salon. I planted out sage, aubergines, and a melon. The plants that is, not the fruits. Arse! (As it were)
It's top weather out. (And I have been using 'top' in that sense since 1989 for which you can blame the NME. Sorted, etc.) ... And I'm mithering inside since I've not eaten properly since Wednesday and it's safest for all concerned if I'm within bolting range of a bog. Lovely. Current Mood: Paranoid and not sunburned |

Massage and vegetables
This morning I had the last physiotherapy session for the fractured vertebrae. It's been successful, though boring, consisting of lying on my front with a heatpad on my back for 10 minutes, 10 minutes of thumping and mauling, and 10 minutes of electric shocks. The physiotherapist pulled up my panties and re-fastened my bra with "Alors, mademoiselle, je vous rhabille pour la dernière fois". Indeed it is the last time, because I have a prescription for a different physiotherapist for the leg treatments. This one was good at massage, but clueless about exercise and PPS. Then I came home via the garden centre where I spent money needed for the Flooring Fund on things for the vegetable plot. On arrival, did some weeding and soil preparation until too warm. It's summer again, and currently 27C and much too hot to plant out the aubergines/peppers/cucumber/melon. The black redstarts are nesting under the terrace roof as usual, right next to the vegetable plot. They keep shouting hysterically when I water the vegetables. A car-related post. I don't think anyone reads those.
For MOT-related reasons, I'm bobbling about in a different 9000 while mine is being fettled by Justyn-who-does-SAABs (and who was pleased to tell me that he'd just bought a mint 9-5 Carlsson for 700 notes. The complete rotter). It's a CS with the blower set to 'hooligan' and it is very silly indeed. (Un)fortunately, I am forced to drive it for a few more days because the poor sod managed to crack the sump on mine... On the other hand, the Youtubes has worked what I'm like (or at least what one facet is like) and keeps presenting me with DieselPr0n. Yes I would like some footage of a Bristol Hercules and/or a 60-litre V12 Paxman diesel. Although I have to say that I've been closer to that one than the camera-person (It is going to be a bloke though, isn't it.) and it's much more impressive when you're nose-to-injector with the thing. New floor, part the first
Chilly damp weekend and the house smells powerfully of wet cement. The door to the atelier has been taken down to facilitate the work; there is no escape from it indoors and it's rather cool outside. Ah well, the forecast says we'll be back in summer by Tuesday, cement-drying weather. And when it's dry the tiles can be laid. Yay! Roses and orange-blossom
Denis' pruning efforts, while in general very welcome indeed, were not so good for the climbing rose. Climbers don't appreciate hefty pruning, and besides, he took it right back to the briar root. No more climbing rose. I'd been careful until then to remove any suckers, but after the climber was clearly dead I left the suckers to grow. Now there is a profusion of wild roses, and they are lovely. The rosebushes around the edge of the garden are in bloom; so is the seringat. Lush.
